Salar de Uyuni
Salar de Uyuni, or Salar is the world's largest salt flat at more than 4,000 square miles. Located in southwest Bolivia, it has an elevation of nearly 12,000 feet above sea level. The Salar is covered by a few meters of salt, leaving it with an exceptionally flat surface area. The salt on the surface of the salar is harvested by locals in nearby towns, which is then sold throughout Bolivia.
Although the terrain may seem inhospitable, a number of species of flamingos live in and around the Salar. Trips to and around the Salar include a visit to the Salar's main 'island' Incahausi, as well as local hot springs and colored lakes.
